“How does it feel to be a free man again?” I ask Ambrose as we head towards the car. Since he was driven here in a police car, it’s only logical that he’s driving back with us.

“Strange. I feel like any moment, they could turn around and accuse me again,” he mutters.

“I’m sure they won’t.” Not this time.

“But they might. Some people will still think it was me, even if my name is cleared. They’ll just think I got away with it. I saw the looks I got from the receptionist.”

I pause by the car and unlock it with the keys Grammie gave me. She thoughtfully decided to give us some privacy and went into town, doing whatever it is she does. She's never told me, and I've never asked.

“It’ll pass. People will forget this,” I promise.

“But will they? You hear stories all the time where an accusation ruins someone’s life, even if they weren’t guilty.” He runs a hand through his curls. “I’ve accused innocent people before.”

“You were just doing your job.” The same as Dean was. But I don't mention that part, I don't think it'll go down well.

“But maybe I was being hasty. Bringing justice to the dead shouldn’t give us permission to ruin the living.”

I place a hand on his arm. I’m not sure what’s got into him, he’s been so positive and strong the whole time. Maybe having his suspension lifted means he can no longer hide out at my place. He has to return back to work and face the reality and damage of what this accusation has done.

“Let’s just go back to the shop. You’ll feel better being away from the station.”

“I want to go home,” Ambrose mutters. “I’ve missed my own bed, my own stuff. Don’t get me wrong, I’m super grateful for your hospitality but I think it’s time I go back to my flat.”

“Nu-uh. You shouldn’t be on your own. Have you never watched a single murder show? When people think it’s over, it’s never over. We still haven’t found who actually committed these murders or why all the evidence points back at you.” It's a constant, and I'm not about to let it happen to him.

He sighs. “Fine… But can we at least swing by my place so I can grab my own pillow? The guest room pillows are so lumpy.”

“Of course. Why didn't you mention it before?” I pull the driver's door open and get in, while he climbs into the passenger side.

"You were protecting me from being accused of murder, insulting your pillows didn't seem like the polite thing to do."

"I think we're beyond polite," I point out. "I could have given you one of my pillows, they're better than the guest ones."

"Wouldn't Topaz be using that?"

"Eurgh, I forgot about her." I start the car and head out of the station's car park, taking a left turn so we can head to Ambrose's flat.

"Where was she last night? I was surprised you came home alone last night."

I wait for the awkwardness over my failed attempt to tell him I liked him to come, but it doesn't.
